Mission

The Mission of Mujeres Unidas, Inc. is to provide education and support services to the communities faced with HIV /AIDS and other health concerns in a bilingual / bicultural familial environment.

History

Originally known as Mujeres Unidas Contra el SIDA (translated as Women United Against AIDS) Mujeres was founded in 1994 as a bilingual/ bicultural support group to serve Latinas (primarily Mexican-American) who were HIV-infected and/or affected in San Antonio, Texas and had no support system.

After almost three years of operating as the only bilingual/bicultural support group for Latinas, Mujeres decided to apply for funding under the fiscal sponsorship with another Latino community based organization, Center for Health Policy Development, Inc. The first funding that Mujeres received was from the Ms. Foundation for Women in the amount of $10,000.00. After three years of this level of funding, Mujeres evaluated its growth pattern and decided to build on its strengths and have the women from the support group who had become empowered to function as peer educators by reaching out to other women in need. This challenged Mujeres to seek other funding that would eventually broaden its scope of services. The Outreach and Education component was launched and began in 2000. In May 2003, Mujeres received its 501 (c) 3 non-profit status. Since then, we have attempted to add to this component with our various programs with the specific goal of ensuring that all are culturally competent.

Three other groups have emerged from the women’s group, Entre Familia (Among Family) - monthly support group sessions for families to come together and receive support from other family members of people living with HIV/AIDS; weekly support group sessions for HIV-impacted women, entitled Mujeres’ Writing / Artistic Circle; and weekly support group sessions for HIV-positive Latino men who are primarily Spanish speaking entitled Amigos Sin Fronteras (Friends Without Borders).

Outreach and Education

Las Adelitas Program

This project provides HIV/AIDS Outreach and Prevention/Education services through community presentations. Presenters include members of Mujeres Unidas who have been certified through American Red Cross.

Madrina (Godmother)

This project allows experienced members of Mujeres Unidas living with HIV/AIDS who assist newly diagnosed women to learn coping strategies and healthy behaviors. Madrinas provide education and mentorship to those Latinas who face the challenge of learning about their chronic illness. Through this educational experience, the women will learn to make positive life changes and adaptations.

Pláticas

Mujeres Unidas is funded by the Pfizer through the Southern HIV AIDS Prevention Initiative to conduct plátícas in the form of focus groups and small group presentations to Latinas and their families. The focus groups are intended to solicit discussion on how Latino parents can best educate their children/adolescents about HIV, STDs, drugs, abstinence, condoms, and HIV testing. The small group presentations, target Latinas, which addresses a basic understanding of issues pertaining to HIV/AIDS and take place in private homes or other settings and include an incentive offered to the host/hostess and their participants.

Project SEEK

Mujeres Unidas is currently collaborating with the Center for Health Care Services on Project SEEK. The focus of this project is to seek out people living with HIV, who experience substance abuse, mental health problems, and or homelessness and have fallen out of medical care services. The primary goal of this project is to enroll these clients back into care .

Project Hoy en Adelante

Project Hoy en Adelante is a nationwide diabetes prevention program that uses theater-based peer education to reduce diabetes in Latinas ages 18-44, which is funded by the National Latina Health Network. It will train Latino educators to use teatro as a medium to reach Latinas at-risk for diabetes.

Project SAY!

Project SAY! is a nationwide HIV prevention program that uses theater-based peer education. Mujeres Unidas has recruited and trained a group of Youth Peer educators (Voices for Choices) whose main goal is to identify different venues for educating Latino Youth at-risk for HIV/AIDS.
